Working with individuals and organisations who have innovative solutions that can be used to improve the NHS and the care system.

The Innovation Exchange, funded by the Office for Life Sciences, is part of the national Health Innovation Network and is designed to provide support to innovators to help develop, test and implement solutions to meet the challenges faced by the health and care system.
At Health Innovation South West, we work closely with health and care systems and providers, industry and academia partners to accelerate the design, development and deployment of solutions to health and care challenges within the South West region and beyond.
During 2022/23 our Innovation Exchange:
- Met with 165+ innovators to assess their needs and potential to impact our health and care system.
- Collaborated with three other Health Innovation Networks to deliver the AHSN flagship innovator event Bridging the Gap. This year the focus was on bridging the gap between innovators and the Integrated Care Systems of our region. Attended by 160+ innovators and system members.
- Partnered with West of England AHSN and SetSquared Partnership to deliver our Health Innovation Programme (HIP), an intensive five-day course designed to help innovators develop and refine their business model canvass, understand the NHS and care system, and develop their value proposition.
- Created an online Innovation Portal providing innovators with the opportunity to showcase their innovations to the health and care system, and allowing the system to identify potential solutions to problems.
- Ran our Health Equity Innovation Challenge 2022 fund, supporting six innovations addressing health equity in children and young people’s mental health to carry out real world validation of their work
- Ran a series of innovator webinars covering evaluation and health economics, and funding/bid writing, partnering with Exeter-based consultancy, Granted.
Impact of our Innovation Exchange in 2022/23:
- Leveraged 47% more investment funding for companies we support than in 2021/22
- Worked with 264 companies
- Supported the creation and safeguarding of 75.6 jobs
- Provided navigation and signposting support to 85+ innovators
- Provided in-depth ‘enhanced’ support to 80+ innovators, including value proposition development, opportunities to showcase to the NHS and care sectors, and evaluation advice and support (see pyramid for full support offer)
- Supported the introduction and evaluation of 11 innovations into new clinical settings across our region, including supporting community staff in falls teams in Cornwall to rehabilitate those at risk of falls using the GaitSmart – Sensor Based Motion Analysis device, working with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) to support NHS Digital health checks in Cornwall using Tickertest, and supporting frontline clinical teams communicate with patients using Cardmedic.
